I designed it to be built in stages in order to earn two achievements: "Getting on track like a pro" and "Lazy bastard".
How to achieve "Lazy bastard" and "Getting on track like a pro" in the same run with the help of this blueprint book
TIP: It is much easier to get those two on separate runs, if you insist on getting both of them in a single run you will have to complete the Stages very quickly and will not have any time to "breathe".
Stage 0 (Follow to the letter for Lazy bastard only):
Don't make any items other than indicated in the steps below or you will exceed the limit.
Start mining iron ore and producing iron plates using the items you start with, gather some stone and fuel by hand (mining big rocks gives you lots of both)
Produce 1 Burner mining drill on hand
Produce 2 Stone furnaces on hand
Place new miner and furnace on copper
Produce on hand: 1 Lab, 1 Electric pole, 1 Steam engine, 1 Boiler, 1 Water pump, 10 Automation science packs
Setup minimal power plant and feed it manually with fuel, place the lab near it because you can't produce more power poles at this stage.
Research Automation
Produce on hand 1 Assembling machine
From now on you will not produce anything else on hand.
Stage 1:
Using Assembling machine produce another 3 Assembling machines, 3 power poles and at least 3 inserters
Place the Starter 1 blueprint and build just the part producing Assembling machines, feed resources manually into the built assembling machines to build more assembling machines and finish Starter 1 blueprint.
During first 4 stages you need to manually put the required plates into chests as you will have no belts yet. The chests are marked with constant combinators showing you what to put where - I know you can't build them at this stage but keeping them as unbuilt ghosts will help you see which resource goes where quickly.
Stage 2:
Place the blueprint Starter 2 over the already existing buildings and build it.
Start expanding your mining operations using newly constructed Burner mining drills available in Starter 2 blueprint.
Don't forget to manually feed fuel into the power plant and resources into the chests.
Stage 3:
Build Starter 3 blueprint.
Start researching Logistics.
Stage 4:
Build Starter 4 blueprint.
Convert your manual iron mining/smelting to "First smelter" blueprint. You can make it bigger just don't forget to add the "coal" filter on the inserters inserting into the Stone furnaces as otherwise they will start producing Steel (when you research Steel production).
Convert your manual copper mining/smelting to "First smelter" blueprint (don't forget to change the output splitter filter to copper plates).
Convert your coal mining setup to Coal self-loader blueprint, put a splitter at it's output and automate coal delivery to power plant and to Iron/Copper smelters.
Stage 5:
We will get rid of manual feeding of assembling machines through chests.
Make sure you have enough belts to bring the iron and copper plates to the base. On top of that you will need 84 additional belts, 22 underground belts and 8 splitters.
Remove all input chests along with constant combinator ghosts - you won't need them anymore.
Place Starter 5 blueprint on top of the base and build the belts.
Connect belts from smelters into the base as indicated and remove the constant combinators marking inputs.
Your base is now fully automatic.
Stage 6:
Build Starter 6 blueprint on top of the existing base.
Expand your powerplant to about 10MW.
Maybe place some turrets around as biters might start to become a nuisance at this point. Also producing a machine gun in an ad hoc'ly placed assembling machine is a good idea now.
Start building a real Iron Smelter from the blueprint.
Start building a real mining operation using Electric mining drills.
TIP: keep the old mining/smelting in place (if you have enough space on the iron patch) to have even more plates coming in.
Stage 7:
Build the Starter 7 blueprint on top of existing base.
If doing the "Getting on track like a pro":
Start researching towards trains.
Build a small steel smelter.
Build the "Train" fab blueprint.
If time is running out start producing some engines in additional assembling machines manually feeding them.
You also need to produce some tracks (10 is more than enough and they produce quickly) to place the locomotive on when it's ready so do that using a single manually fed assembling machine.
